Primary Care Psychological Therapies Services (talking therapies) are provided across east Kent in the following areas:

Canterbury
Deal
Dover
Herne Bay
Sandwich
Swale (Sittingbourne and surrounding villages / Sheppey)

Talking therapies can help address many problems including the following:

Anxiety disorders
Depression
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Panic disorders
Social phobias
Stress or trauma
Anger
Phobias
Difficult life events (childbirth, redundancy, retirement, illness or injury)
Relationship difficulties
Unresolved issues from early life

Counselling Services in the Ashford or Shepway areas are provided by Counselling Team Ltd and KCA.

Accessing the service

For Canterbury/Deal/Dover/Herne Bay/Sandwich

Counselling is available to those over the age of 18.

This service is accessed through referral from GPs, practice nurses or any other member of the practice team.

For Swale (Sittingbourne and surrounding villages / Sheppey)

Counselling is available to those over the age of 18.

All referrals for psychological therapies for Swale go to KCA who are the single point of access.

Speak with your GP and ask to discuss this option. Alternatively, you may self refer by contacting KCA directly. When KCA receive your referral they will offer an initial screening to determine whether a referral to us is appropriate.

Once we have received your referral from KCA we will write to you to inform you of the next stage in the process.

You may be invited in for an initial assessment or your name may be placed on one of our waiting lists. Sometimes the process can take a while and we would encourage you to contact us if you have any concerns or questions.

At your assessment you will be able to speak with a clinical member of the team to discuss any difficulties you may be experiencing and what treatment options may be best suited to your needs. Appointments are offered at various locations in Swale (please see the service locations listing for Swale).

It may be that your needs can be met by one of the many helping agencies available in the local community or in neighbouring regions.

If it is decided that we are the best agency to help you, we will advise you of the waiting time and the options available to you. We may offer some suggestions of self-help for you to engage with while you are waiting for treatment.
