PLACE

Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) is a collaboration between hospital staff, patient assessors, patients, service users, their family, carers, patient advocates and volunteers to act as patient assessors.

All of the trust’s inpatient facilities, including rehabilitation units, are subject to a patient-led assessment which focuses on several key areas:

  • Cleanliness
  • Food and hydration
  • Privacy, dignity and wellbeing
  • Condition, appearance and maintenance
  • Dementia: how well the needs of patients with dementia are met
  • Disability: how well the needs of patients with a disability are met.

Those who take part are asked to look at wards and public areas, each determining how they would rate standards against a set criteria. They look at the environment and cleanliness and the quality of food provided.

Travel expenses are paid and assessments may last up to a day for our larger units (a light lunch is provided). The results are made public and are used to measure the trust's performance by the Care Quality Commission. An hour-long training session is provided in advance of the visit.

Dates for the visits are announced approximately four weeks in advance, with the units only getting 48 hours notice.

Patients must have been former KMPT service users.
