If you’ve got things on your mind that are changing the way you go about your day to day life, sitting down and talking it through with a friendly expert can help.

We have a team of professionally trained and accredited practitioners based around Kent who provide psychology therapy services, also known as talking therapies, which are part of the government’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme.

Many people will experience emotional difficulties at some point in their life. Psychological therapies are aimed at providing help for people with anxiety and depression and related problems such as:

  • Trauma
  • Anger
  • Phobias – feeling scared of certain situations or things like spiders, confined spaces, needles etc
  • Obsessions and compulsions – being excessively bothered by recurring unwanted thoughts, or doing certain things like excessive washing of hands, checking of things.
  • Feeling that you are not coping with life events such as childbirth, redundancy, illness or injury
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Unresolved issues from your past.

We are not an emergency service so if you feel you need urgent care please see your GP or visit an A & E Department.

Visit our frequently asked questions page to find out more about our service and how we may be able to help you in overcoming the problems you are experiencing.

What can you expect from our Psychological Therapies Service?

The service offers time-limited, evidence-based psychological therapies including counselling.  The first step is  usually four to six, 30 to 40 minute telephone sessions with a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and these sessions will focus on using guided self-help for mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression, stress and worry, sleep difficulties and mild obsessive compulsive behaviours and thoughts.

Your practitioner will help you to set some goals and support you in learning strategies such as becoming more active, relaxation techniques, managing worry and unhelpful thinking habits and problem solving strategies.

We also run a Stress Control Psychoeducational Class where you will learn new coping skills in a supported environment.  You will not be asked to talk about personal information or the difficulties you are experiencing.

Our service also provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychological Interventions and Counselling for those who are experiencing more severe levels of anxiety and depression, trauma, obsessive compulsive behaviours, anger or for those, where guided self help has been tried but did not help.  This therapy is generally available at GP surgeries across the Medway area and South West Kent (Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Edenbridge, Weald and the surrounding villages.

Once you have contacted us

Once you have contacted us (or your GP refers you to our service) we will contact you to advise you of an initial telephone assessment appointment with a clinical member of our team.

We aim to book an appointment that is convenient for you and generally we try to offer you a choice of two appointments. However, if we are unable to meet your needs we will advise you to contact your GP who can discuss alternative providers with you.

At the time of your assessment call we will telephone you and the conversation usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes. During the call you will be able to outline any difficulties you are experiencing and we will be able to advise you on whether our service may be of help to you. If we are, we will advise you on the therapies that are available in your area.

We may also be able to give you information about alternative helping agencies in the local community, support and/or therapies that may be more suited to your needs.
