Work experience

There are many different routes which enable people to start a career within the NHS. We aim to offer a variety of opportunities. Some will help individuals make career choices by providing an insight into the various roles within our organisation and others will support people to develop knowledge and skills that may assist them into future employment.

By offering work experience the trust is forging partnerships with the local community improving opportunities for local young people and helping address issues of inequality of opportunity and access to healthcare.

We offer the following:

  • Work experience for secondary school students
  • Opportunities for post 16 students including A Level students, pre-graduates and post graduates.
  • Opportunities for people interested in a career change and the unemployed to gain vital experience and insight into career opportunities in the NHS.

Types of placements available

Some roles are ‘clinical’, which means directly related to patients and their treatment and some are ‘non-clinical’ i.e. administration, finance etc.

Work experience is useful for whichever type of career you are interested in, and it is still valuable to get non-clinical work experience even if you hope to end up in a clinical career.

Our work experience placements take place with both clinical and non-clinical teams and are designed for students who are at least 16 years of age.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept students under 18 for work experience in clinical areas. We recommend that you explore the NHS careers website before deciding which department you would like experience in - that way you can ensure you are gaining the most from your work experience.

In order to access a placement within the trust, students must complete the work placement application form and health questionnaire.

We will work to identify a placement for you within eight weeks of receiving your request and will let you know as soon as we have identified a suitable placement, or if we are unable to accommodate your request.

It is important to note that we aren’t always able to accommodate week long placements in some of our services and there are times when we have to limit the offer to a day or two. There may also be times when we cannot accommodate the exact dates requested.
