With 21 years’ experience as a practicing Consultant Psychiatrist, and a passion for education and training future workforce and improving services for adults with dementia, we would like to congratulate Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Bhat on his prestigious election as Chair of the Old Age Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Starting in June 2024, Dr Bhat will be in post as the new Chair for four years, and plans to make further strides in the development of services for older adults.

“I am hoping to have input into some of the policies that will shape how we deliver mental health services to our older adult. This is also an opportunity for me to help improve the support that is available for the college faculty members and increase their influence in service development, which I am quite excited about.”

As an international medical graduate from India, Dr Bhat started his career in Liverpool in 1994. He embarked on a career path in old age psychiatry and then worked as a consultant old age psychiatrist in North East London for 21 years before moving to his current role as Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Kent and Medway Partnership Trust in May 2022.

“Supporting those living with dementia is a key focus for the trust, and we are always looking for ways to develop the service we offer,” says Dr Bhat, who has been integral to shaping the key services the Trust provides for older adults with dementia.

Currently working with Kent and Medway ICB and public health to develop a prevention strategy for dementia within the local region, Dr Bhat hopes his new role as Chair will give him the opportunity to have a national perspective on the matter, which will also help in the improvement and development of dementia care across within KMPT.

With a total of 29 years of working experience in the field, Dr Bhat shares advice for those considering going into his line of work:

“Psychiatry is an exciting field to work in and you have plenty of opportunities to make a real difference to the lives of others.”
