Placement pilot boosts training hours – and scores top marks from student nurses

Date added: 02 August 2023

A KMPT nursing placement pilot study has resulted in enhanced learning for students and increased training capacity, due to its innovative methods – and 100% of participants said they would recommend it to peers.

The Collaborative Learning in Practice (CLiP) model, which has been successfully rolled-out by other UK trusts, was trialled by four students on placement on a forensic mental health ward for five months last year.

A multi student model, CLiP enables a single Practice Assessor or Educator to support several students on the same shift by delivering first class team teaching in a healthy learning environment.

Specialist coaching tools, where students are encouraged to share skills with each other, are used to boost student independence, reinforce self-directed learning, foster leadership and reflection skills and increase confidence when working with service users.

The KMPT placement cohort reported a sense of belonging to a valued team and felt confident to support peers while realising their own ability to actively deliver the best possible care.

On completion, participants felt equipped with clinical problem solving and organisational skills and better prepared for their first role as a registered practitioner.

CLiP is now being implemented trust-wide and the recruitment of a dedicated facilitator will generate at least 1,000 additional placement hours every week.

KMPT ward teams will be able to access CLiP resources and training as part of the trust’s new KMPT Coaching and Mentoring Strategy.

Findings and recommendations from KMPT’s pilot study will be shared with NHS England via national peer support networks.
